What’s More Important To Employers In Ghana, Qualification Or Experience?
Almost all graduates in ghana ponder over this common question. Before we delve further to the core of the subject, let’s try to distinguish the terms. Qualification refers to the attributes or qualities possessed by a person by virtue of a specific training they have successfully completed. For instance, if you study BSc. Physics and graduate successfully. The certificate obtained is your qualification.
Experience, on the other hand, is a very broad term. It represents all the pockets of knowledge that a person has acquired through previous exposure to a working environment. To gain experience, it takes direct involvement in the activities of a group or organization concerned. For example, undergraduate students gain experience by doing attachment, internships, voluntary work and so on.
Now here is the problem – it’s possible for a person to hold many qualifications without having any relevant experience. Unfortunately, that’s a loophole employers consider before turning applications. Under normal circumstances, good qualifications combined with good relevant experience will make a job applicant highly not rejectable.
What Matters to Ghanaian Employers, Experience or Qualification?
As far as Ghana in West Africa is concerned, “qualification” is just a secondary factor to be considered when selecting job applicants. More emphasis is placed on the experience level of the candidates.
This popular preference for experience in the job market, explains why many graduates finish school with excellent results but get turned away from jobs in ghana applications. The Ghanaian employment sectors are so blind and corrupt to the extent that, they underrate the potentials of university graduates. At the end of the day, the rejections kill the enthusiasm of the non-smart unemployed graduates, leaving them at the mercies of depression and alcoholism.
In any case, employers may not be solely blamed. I like to believe that all serious job seekers (especially graduates) are the cause of their unemployment situations in ghana. Why would you spend 4-6 years studying a program, without planning ahead and putting back up plans, in readiness to face unemployment?
As the sayings go “chances favor the prepared mind”, “if you fail to plan, then you are planning to fail”. Yes, it’s true that there are limited latest jobs in Ghana at any given time. In fact, most job seekers are not enthusiastic to apply to adverts of ongoing recruitment in ghana on most job websites due to frequent or no response to their numerous job applications. But If you can’t a job, then use your skills (qualification) to create one. Real graduates are job creators, not job seekers. What did you learn at school? Apply it, and you will get a job by being self employed.
Talking of skills, let’s enter into another dispute. Employers also focus much on the skills of applicants. But what are skills? They are abilities acquired through learning. You can’t expect an employer to hire you when you don’t have the skill to deliver on the job.
Conclusion
As discussed above, many recruiters judge applicants by virtue of their experience level. Qualification is also considered, but nowadays, in addition to the glut of graduates on the job market, employers don’t trust qualifications because they can be faked. Experience, on the other hand, cannot easily be faked.
Even if you succeed in faking experience, sooner or later, you are going to get exposed on the job. To simplify your job seeking process, get a strong qualification interspersed with strong skills and relevant experience.
