The University of Ghana invites applications from suitably qualified persons for the position of Pro Vice-Chancellor, Research, Innovation And Development, to begin on 1st August 2026.
THE INSTITUTION:
The University of Ghana was established in 1948 to provide higher education, undertake research, disseminate knowledge and to foster relationships with outside persons and bodies. The University of Ghana has a student population of over 70,000 and over 6,000 employees, made up of academic and senior administrative and professional employees, as well as other support staff.

The Position
The Pro Vice-Chancellor, Research, Innovation and Development shall, under the Vice-Chancellor:
• coordinate the development, implementation and evaluation of research and innovation programmes;
• coordinate the development, implementation and evaluation of research and innovation Policies, Regulations, Rules, Bye-Laws, Guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures;
• oversee the activities bordering on the research life cycle, including the development of research proposals, sourcing research funds, ethical clearance for research, implementation of research proposals, research grant administration, production and dissemination of research findings and intellectual property;
• oversee the implementation of programmes and activities to improve and enhance the faculty, staff and student research and innovation experience; and in particular:
O oversee the implementation of the University’s research strategy and policy;
O oversee fundraising for research programmes and activities;
O oversee the effective distribution and efficient use of research funds, including research grant administration, in line with priority areas identified in the University’s strategic plan;
O set standards for the production of the highest quality of research output by the University;
• set strategies for effective dissemination of the University’s research output;
• establish systems for ethical clearance for research programmes and activities;
• establish systems for the registration, patenting and commercialization of intellectual property resulting from research programmes and activities;
• oversee the activities of the Research and Innovation Directorate;
• oversee the activities of the Institutional Research and Planning Directorate;
• oversee the activities of the Information Technology Directorate;
• oversee the activities of the Institute of Applied Science and Technology;
• oversee the research performance of the University;
• promote innovation within all establishments of the University;
• provide a framework and procedures for guiding and supporting innovation within all establishments of the University;
• foster a coordinated innovation culture among students, staff and faculty;
• provide guidance on innovation mentoring and benchmarking in accordance with international best practice;
• facilitate strong links between Establishments of the University and relevant stakeholders, particularly industry and Government;
• incubate potential channels of innovation such as science parks, incubation hubs, makerspaces, knowledge transfer, technology transfer, spin-offs, start-ups, commissioned research, collaborative research, technological collaboration, intellectual property management, internships, externships and entrepreneurial training; and
• perform any other functions that the Council or Vice-Chancellor may assign.
The Pro Vice-Chancellor Research, Innovation and Development shall additionally, assist the Vice-Chancellor to deliver on their vision and the strategic priorities of the University.
Qualification Required & Experience
Applicants must:
• be a Professor from an academic/research institution or a person from industry eligible for that rank
• have proven experience of providing effective academic leadership, especially in the areas of research, innovation and development in an academic/research institution, have extensive experience of managerial and administrative leadership and capacity to promote a collegial research environment in the University.
• Have a proven track record of grantsmanship and leading high level research projects

• Must be of exemplary ethical conduct and have a high degree of integrity;
• Must have mature and of sober judgement;
• Must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills,
• Must have proven leadership skills and be a team player;

Tenure
The Pro Vice-Chancellor shall hold office for three years on terms and conditions approved by the University Council and is eligible for re-appointment for a further term of up to three years.
Applicants should be able to complete a three-year term before reaching the statutory retirement age of 60 years.
