ROLE DESCRIPTION: Reporting to the Foreman Engineering: Mechanical, the role will be responsible for the safe operating /
hoisting of all manual and automated winding engines in area of responsibility to obtain production levels as required by the production
/ mining plan.
TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Physically operate the winding engine to hoist and lower people, materials and ore in the shaft in compliance with the
regulations of the Minerals Act.
Ensures that he/she is always conversant with the Minerals Act and any company or management instructions pertaining to the
safe operating of the winding engine.
Responsible for the safe operating of the winding engine and movement of people and material in a conveyance.
Facilitate the safe passage of people, materials and ore, up and down the shaft.
Verify load weights and check them against lifting capacities to prevent overload.
Responsible for transmitting and reacting to signals in accordance with the regulations.
Responsible to ensure that the Winding Engine Driver logbook is completed with respect to all winder related activities and to
be countersigned in his/her presence.
Inspect and perform safety test on winding engines for legal compliance at required time intervals.
Advise and make recommendations to the Banksmen and Cage Attendant regarding simplification of work during shift.
Operate the winding engine in order to perform statutory tests and other condition assessment inspections.
Resets automatic hoists when trip outs occur to ensure a minimum delay on hoisting time, after evaluating reasons for the trip
and it is safe to reset the winder.
Records conditions of winding engine daily, on each shift. Completes drivers’ logbook daily on each shift. Lists stoppages and
reasons daily for each occurrence. Lists call-outs for repairs and maintenance.
Reports faults and unsafe conditions to Section Engineer and Central Control Room.
Prepare shift operation reports, record breakdowns and levels of productivity and report to the relevant stakeholders at the end
of the shift.
Model behaviour that is consistent with the Company Vision and Values. Manage and report on non-compliance issues.
Perform risk assessments (Mini) and participates in risk assessments (Activity based).
Takes cognisance of and adhere to Company policies, procedures and relevant legislation. Manage and report on non-
compliance issues.
Establish and maintain good working relationships and an effective / sound communication system with the Engineering
Function and operation. .

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Grade 12
Certificate Onsetter
Winding Engine Driver Certificate of Competence
A minimum 3 years’ experience on winding engines
Computer Literacy and Microsoft Office Suite
Valid Drivers’ License
OTHER SKILLS / COMPETENCIES:
Identify risks and hazards and implement precautions to ensure adherence to health, safety and environmental legislation,
policies and procedures.
Have knowledge and skill in operating the winding engine according to standard operating procedures and relevant legislation.
Know and understand safety, health and environmental legislation, policies and procedures on the shaft and winding engine.
Have knowledge and skill in visually inspecting the winding engine and detect abnormalities.
Know and understand the regulations, safety policies and procedures when moving people, material and ore up and down the
shaft.
Identify defect or malfunctions on the winding engine to minimize downtime or production losses.
Have knowledge and skill in ensuring that the cage is not overloaded before moving it up and down the shaft.
Document and record the findings of the inspection on the winding engines.
Have proper knowledge of the winder safety devices and relevant settings and interlocks.
