Senior Nurse / Site Manager at Stellenbosch University

Duties/Pligte

  • Helping to manage the implementation of the trial(s);
  • Performing clinical assessments (e.g. weighing, measuring, and checking vital signs);
  • Assisting with the clinical evaluation of participants (can be adults or children);
  • Taking blood samples (including from babies, children and adolescents);
  • Inserting intravenous cannulas (as required);
  • Performing TB diagnostic procedures, e.g. by obtaining sputum samples and gastric aspirates;
  • Preparing all samples, including gastric aspirates for transport to the laboratory;
  • Ensuring accurate completion of data collection forms, including questionnaires;
  • Managing patient records: maintaining and filing records according to visits (including blood results);
  • Recording essential data on the relevant forms meticulously and on time;
  • Maintaining patient confidentiality;
  • Maintaining clear communication channels with the study team and routine clinic staff;
  • Assisting and supporting the study team with recruitment;
  • Assisting and managing a team of study staff, as well as the daily logistics of a busy clinical trial site to ensure optimal staff utilisation.
  • A nursing qualification and registration with the South African Nursing Council;
  • At least two years’ clinical paediatric or equivalent research experience, including performing phlebotomies;
  • Experience in leading and managing a research team;
  • The ability to solve problems independently and effectively;
  • Fluency in writing, reading and speaking English;
  • A valid driver’s licence;
  • The ability to work with babies, young children and adolescents;
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to function in a multidisciplinary team;
  • A punctual, well organised and responsible work ethic;
  • Basic computer literacy;
  • The willingness to work in townships should the project require it;
  • The willingness and availability to work flexible work hours should the project require it;
  • The ability to prioritise own workload and exercise independent decision-making.

Recommendation/Aanbeveling

  • GCP training and certification;
  • Proficiency in isiXhosa or Afrikaans (or both).
